Task 3 - What similarities do you notice in Burton's films? Write a personal response to at least two films commenting on the similarities that you notice.

In the Tim Burton films I have watched, I noticed that all include a character that is an outcast and an outsider to the rest of the characters in the movie. In Dark Shadows, the outcast is Barnabas Collins, who is a vampire, therefore majorly different to the mortals in the town of Collinsport. Similarly, in Edward Scissor Hands, the outcast is Edward who is the supernatural creature, being different than everyone else in the little village and causing him to be stranded in his castle, far from civilization. Also, in The Corpse Bride, Victor Van Dort, is sent to the land of the dead, in which he didn't suite and has considered an alternative to drink a potion to enable him to fit in.
There is also a contrast in the design of the films that demonstrate two split worlds. Alice in Wonderland, has two worlds which contrast each other significantly. One of the worlds is a normal world of reality, set in the olden days in England. However the other world, Wonderland, is a huge contrast as it's a place of full of mystical and supernatural creatures, exaggeration of colours and packed with unnatural events happening that in the real world, wouldn't happen. Imagination and reality hit each other which are in most of Tim Burton's films as he is very well known for his quirky-themed movies. The same happens in Edward Scissor hands; the pastel-coloured village contrasts with the very eerie, dark castle in which Edward lives. The mood change is changed from happy and full of life to suddenly fearful, distant and lonely. This is created by the use of colour, lighting and shadows. The characters used in Tim Burton's films are very peculiar and supernatural characters. For example, in Dark Shadows, there is a vampire, a witch and a girl that turns into a werewolf; similarily, in Alice in Wonderland, there are mnay creatures such as talking rabbits, mice, dogs and fearful, gigantic monsters.
